<p> Wars and battles are always heartbreaking for both sides of any conflict. An admirable tactic of the Israeli military is that they often notify Palestinian officials before they strike a target so that casualties might be avoided. No one in the civilized world ever wishes to hear of civilian tragedies, so it is good to see precautions taken to avoid them. Of course, in clandestine operations, this is not possible but it is a respectable policy they attempt to employ. </p>

<div>Recently, I lost, yet, another friend to a less-taxed, lower-regulated, more affordable state. It has been a hard year of on-again, off again sadness and loss, with 4 good friends escaping the high cost of California living and moving on to greener, more prosperous pastures. Two of them even picked "no income-tax" states: Florida and Texas. It feels like a little piece of me goes with them but I am constantly striving to see the bright side, and consider a glass-half-full approach. I'm working to reinforce thoughts like:</div>
<h1>Don't look at it as losing another friend, think of it as gaining another vacation spot!</h1>

<p>It's always a happier time to look forward to a reunion than to suffer the sadness of missing family and friends. For any of us who have lost loved ones to death or disease, it is particularly difficult to imagine a joyful reunion; it's more natural to despair over what seems to be a permanent separation. Life after this kind of loss can seem hopeless, especially to those who have no religious or spiritual experience.</p>
<h1>But, I believe it is God's plan to reunite all of us with our loved ones. </h1>
<p>When loss is accompanied with this perspective, there is a comfort and peace that distills on our hearts and minds. I lost a brother to schizophrenia, after he was in a bicycle accident as an 8-year-old. Even though I miss, daily, that adorable sibling I once knew, I have great hope in Christ's Resurrection that, hereafter, he will be healed and restored to that loveable, entertaining character of a brother I originally had. This kind of knowledge is power: Power to cope with loss, power to help others, power to achieve our goals; actually, power to accomplish all kinds of good in this world. And I hope we all feel empowered to do just that!</p>

<p>I'm anxiously anticipating the new, upcoming (in 2020)<em> Heaven Heals </em>book, and I am especially excited to meet up with all my new-found friends at the IS Conference of authors at the end of the month! People important to us may come and go but we will always have that everlasting connection, which binds us to those we care about, as all of us are God's children. </p>

<p>Well, I thought I was being so responsible to get a flu shot early this year. But it seems this year's strain is like no other! By early afternoon, I was aching and fatigued; soon after, a fever surfaced. I was so disappointed because I planned on an active weekend but I wondered if this vaccine really stuck it to me. I wiped out with a full-on case of mini-flu! Maybe it was just a coincidence that I took the vaccine at the exact same time I had been exposed to the environmental virus (it was an inactivated vaccine) but I spoke with a friend Sunday night (I was finally beginning to move.) She said the same thing happened to her. She had taken past flu vaccines with no effects at all, or maybe a runny nose barely. I suppose the germs are "really out there" this year!</p>
<h1>It sure reminded me of the saying, "If you've got your health, you've got it all!"</h1>

<h1>Whether it is our physical, emotional, social, spiritual, or mental health, I have reflected on 5 things that are most important for good health or healing.</h1>
<ol>
<li>Sleep - living on 4-5 hours of sleep a night will eventually take a toll. A good night's sleep (7-9 hours for adults, depending on individuals) is one of <em>the </em>most important<em> </em>factors in maintaining/achieving good health. During sleep, the body is working to support healthy brain function and maintain the overall health (performs tissue repair & strengthens the immune system, for example). In children & teens (who require more), sleep also helps support growth & development. Studies show that sleep deficiency alters activity in parts of the brain. Deficiency may lead to trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling emotions & behavior, and coping with change. It has also been linked to depression, poor judgement, & risk-taking behavior. It leads to less productivity, more dependency on caffeine and other stimulants, & can endanger safety by slowing reaction time, leading to more mistakes and accidents.</li>
<li>Nutrition - we all know how a balanced diet promotes overall good health. It also has been shown to reduce the risk of obesity and chronic diseases. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, & less proccessed foods (less packages from a shelf) are most desirable in providing a balance of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Sugar, especially, is one of those stimulants we grab when we are sleep deprived to give energy, providing a quick <em>pick-me-up,</em> as fatigue sets in. It also reeks havok on the pancreatic metabolism (insulin production) and contributes to the onset of Diabetes. Many times, we may be getting enough sleep but are continually feeling tired. This can be a great indicator of poor nutitional intake, which deprives every cell & organ in the body of the necessary nutrients needed to perform their functions.</li>
<li>Exercise, in association with good nutrition, promotes health, reduces risk of disease, & improves quality of life. Exercise releases endorphins, which improve our happiness, and has powerful effects on mood in the short and long terms. As you know, I love to swim outside, and exercise, especially that which is done outdoors, lifts the spirits, contributing to mental, emotional, social, even spiritual well-being.</li>
<li>Stress - this can be the trickiest of all because we often can't control the stresses inflicted upon us. There are suggestions, though, for reducing stress, including exercise, laughter, leisure time with friends/family, journaling, supplements (lemon balm, valerian root, Omega-3 fatty acids, kava kava all have anti-anxiety effects), ambience & other soothing facilitators (lavender, rose, frankincense, chamomile, vetiver, orange, geranium essential oils/flickering flame or no-flame candles), caffeine reduction, & yoga, which leads to the last important health factor.</li>
<li>Quiet time - meditation, bible/inspirational quotes, prayer, & calming minutes/hours will all promote health & healing. Especially in this loud and fast-paced world, quieting the mind allows for both the creative and logical areas of the brain to function properly. Regulating emotions, self-control, confidence-building, thought organization, & spiritual inspiration are all enabled when we plan those calming breaks throughout the day. Science tells us that privacy and personal space is more important to the psyche than we realize. Chaos, fear, noise, & indecision adversely affect all aspects (physical, mental, emotional, social, & spiritual) of our well-being.</li>

<p>I guess I was lucky, at any rate, that I merely got a minor case of flu last weekend, which probably served an important purpose. It has caused a reflection of healthy benefits and has recommitted me to a thoughtful re-evaluation of priorities in guarding & restoring it, going forward.</p>

<p><strong>Here I am, happy to share with you my checklist of 5 steps to help enhance your love story:</strong></p>

<li>Have a clear goal in mind for yourselves as a couple: Make the marriage last! Even the best of relationships is work, so schedule time to do enjoyable things together - date nights or like-minded activities and projects. Remember to laugh and don't take yourself too seriously! </li>
<li>Bring spirituality into the relationship: Research shows that body, mind and spirit are connected, therefore, including positive beliefs, comfort, strength gained from religion, meditation and prayer can contribute to well-being and improved relationships. Show gratitude towards each other and God.</li>
<li>Honest but considerate communication is key: Disagreements in your relationship doesn't mean you can't succeed. Everyone needs to express themselves and feel free to disagree but remember to show kindness; never do anything to intentionally hurt each other. Avoid negativity and remember the most important words: I love you and I'm sorry! ? </li>
<li>Be each other's best friend: Compliment and encourage each other often, just as you would any friend. Don't smother each other with restrictions but respect each other's needs and goals to reach their full potential. Never speak badly about your spouse to others. Remember, growing apart and affairs occur when one partner feels the need find someone to talk to, be listened to, and be understood.</li>
<li>Look for ways to serve one another: Naturally, a relationship should never be one-sided,where one is sensitive to the other's needs but the other is oblivious to anyone but him/herself. Mutual involvement, charity, and devotion can go a long way in resolving differences and disputes. Forgive each other and retain the joy in your marriage. In other words: Have fun!</li>

<p> Is this a splendid Hollywood Bowl, 4th of July photo, or what!?! Are you looking forward to a July 4th holiday of parades, salutations, get-togethers, music, and fireworks - a celebration of America's independence and birth, as a nation, 243 years ago? The Original Founders were not stupid, stodgy, old Englishmen (as some have alleged) but were well-educated, community leaders, who were among the most brilliant thinkers of all time. They studied governments and societies, financial structures, political systems, history, religion, human nature - just to name a few areas of their expertise. Many of them were the Framers of the proclaimed Declaration of Independence, participants in an American Revolution, and constructionists of a Constitution, the supreme framework for the organization of the U.S. government. The Constitution defines the relationship our government has with the states, its citizens, visitors, and foreign nationals. G. Beck was once quoted as saying: "When those 56 men gathered to declare our Independence on July 4th, 1776, they weren't just saying no to British rule. They were saying no to all rulers. They were declaring the beginning of the great American experiment, which sought to answer the question: Can man rule himself? Even with all the hardships and troubles facing America, I still believe the answer is YES! And I say that as emphatically and enthusiastically as I possibly can. Man CAN rule himself and we are going to continue to prove it together! ...my goal is to prove that we have not failed in the goals set forth by our Founders so many years ago on July 4th. Everything... has been done with the intention of giving you the tools, the history, and the information you need to be self-reliant." I agree with him that there are many tools and websites available to us to learn from history and continue to improve upon this great American Experiment! </p>
<p> Every year we celebrate our unique freedoms and those who defend them. We remember the incredible wisdom of the Founders and Framers and the bravery of those who serve America in uniform. We love to share our traditions with our friends. We enjoy our roots, history, culture, language, and enduring relationship with the U.K. We embrace the positive additions to our American landscape, which have come to us through global influences, especially now that they are so easily accessible, through a worldwide Internet. We continually strive to better ourselves, our surroundings, and the opportunities America provides. As the festivities begin tomorrow, it is a marvelous time to think about the involvement and work of maintaining freedom and our famous American resilience. Despite the many social, political, and economic differences that exist, our optimistic attitude and constant persistence motivates us to keep the July 4th flame alive in our hearts this week and well into a promising future of freedom and opportunity! I love the quote, 'When someone tells you that you can't, don't believe it. It's a reflection of their limitations, not yours'". Anything is possible in America!</p>

<p> With the Memorial Day weekend rapidly approaching, it comes time to reflect on the reason we observe this holiday. It isn’t just about barbeques, picnics, poolside amusements, or a “day-off-work,” although they are welcomed and thoroughly enjoyed. In fact, Memorial Day is a solemn remembrance of all those who died, serving our Country in the Armed Forces. </p>
<p> It was originally called Decoration Day and began, May 30, 1868, after the Civil War, to honor and commemorate the thousands of early American soldiers who lost their lives on the battlefield. May 30, was set aside as a day to place flowers and flags at the grave sites of those fallen heroes, honoring their ultimate sacrifices for freedom. Today, American flags are usually flown at half-mast until noon, as the tradition continues, in appreciation of all the American veterans who gave their lives, so that we may enjoy our many liberties (which are the envy of the world). Although, May 30, is the official holiday, in 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Holiday Monday Act, which designated the observance of Memorial Day as the last Monday of the month, enabling a three-day weekend. I have a brother, whose birthday is on Memorial Day, so we have always enjoyed the jubilant activities of gathering in celebration of him, as well as, memorializing our noble servicemen and women. </p>
<p> But it seems that many, especially in younger generations, are no longer taught American history, civics, government, and economics in educational and cultural settings. They aren’t aware of the selfless sacrifices made over the past 243 years of America's existence. Unfortunately, many learn that America is imperialistic and has a history of prejudice and oppression, with nothing good that ever came from it. But, after a long, hard-fought Revolutionary War, between a rag-tag, colonial fighting-ensemble and the Royal, Majestic British Army/Navy, in 1776, this Country was finally born an independence nation! It began its infancy, then advanced through growing pains, as lessons were learned, and progress was made. History is a great teacher and, while mistakes occurred throughout it, just as imperfect human beings achieve growth from adversity, so do civilizations mature, enlarge, and improve with age, in wisdom and experience. </p>
<p> Unfortunately, it seems trendy today to embrace the deception of Socialism. Socialism begins by targeting the youth with societal utopian illusions that promise equal outcomes and social justice. It delivers the narrative that the death and violence associated with its long, verified history is just a façade that never happened. But they obscure the firsthand accounts that reveal the contrary (but we need look no further than the modern socialistic saga of once-thriving, oil-laden Venezuela, which is now in devastating collapse. Socialism must always be painted with a counterfeit brush of flower-filled, rainbow-colored strokes to disguise the harsh reality of poverty, squalor and suffering.</p>
<p> Socialism claims equal outcomes for all (except the ruling elite) but true Socialism’s goal is to end Capitalism. Socialistic attitudes view the masses as common and lowly. This condescension places the elite in lofty positions of power and authority. New Democratic Socialists tout their version as superior to the traditional order. Nevertheless, there are centuries of historical evidence worldwide, indicating starvation, repression, and long lines for daily commodities, especially for insufficient or inadequate medicines and treatments. Untimely deaths occur, due to the limitations, controls, and strains put upon the system. </p>
<p> Sweden, which has long been revered as the socialistic ideal, is not true Socialism. Its economy is capitalistic, even though they are taxed at a very high rate: Roughly 47-80%.<a href="http://file/C:/Users/Kris%20Landgren/Documents/Memorial%20Day.docx#_edn1" target="_blank" data-imported="1">[i]</a> <a href="http://file/C:/Users/Kris%20Landgren/Documents/Memorial%20Day.docx#_edn2" target="_blank" data-imported="1">[ii]</a> When interviewed about high taxes, Swedes stated they accepted them because of the promised benefits, such as retirement. </p>
<p> Still, most Swedes know how to skirt that onerous tax burden. My Swedish friend, we’ll call Elsa, once relayed a conversation she had with her friend. Elsa’s friend informed her that her kitchen was in dire need of an upgrade. She announced she was going to do her kitchen black. Elsa was perplexed, questioning why on earth would anyone want an all-black kitchen. As she probed deeper, the friend revealed there was just no way she could afford a remodel, except she did it black. Suddenly, the light bulb turned on in Elsa’s head: The friend didn’t want a black-colored kitchen, she needed a Black-Market kitchen! An upgrade could only occur with money exchanged under the table - untaxed, so at a much lower price. </p>
<p> Capitalism’s hope and promise of <em>unequal</em> outcomes motivates individuals to work hard, as they imagine, create, invent, and achieve a better life for themselves, their families, and others around them. Fellowship and financial supports are accessible through churches/synagogues, faith-based establishments, neighborhood and community organizations, private foundations, and individual charitable contributions and activities. A capitalistic economy makes possible the high-cost research and development for life-saving prescriptions and discoveries. Technological achievements (often engineered as side-hustles in basements and garages) become widely available and commonplace. Even the poorest around the world are beneficiaries of U.S. subsidies and philanthropic organizations that provide vaccines, medications, health treatments, food, water purification, and technological advancements for communities and countries. The argument that Capitalism makes the rich richer and the poor poorer is not a valid critique of the system. The economic framework, itself, has been the most successful structure for generating economic growth and wealth. It has lifted thousands, if not millions, out of poverty and continues to produce the highest societal standard of living in the history of the world. However, there is a legitimate rebuke of the corrupt effects that occur when greed and indulgence seduce portions of government, corporate, or private sectors into scamming the system. </p>
<p> As Alexander Fraser Tytler said, “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.”</p>
<p> He continued, “The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.”<a href="http://file/C:/Users/Kris%20Landgren/Documents/Memorial%20Day.docx#_edn3" target="_blank" data-imported="1">[iii]</a></p>
<p> Once tyranny prevails, the cycle to escape bondage begins again. Ronald Reagan declared, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.”<a href="http://file/C:/Users/Kris%20Landgren/Documents/Memorial%20Day.docx#_edn4" target="_blank" data-imported="1">[iv]</a></p>
<p> Tytler’s 200-year mark for democratic government existence has already passed for America. Perhaps, it is because we are not a true Democracy, rather, we are a democratic, representative, Constitutional Republic, which has survived beyond prediction. So, how will we pay tribute to those framers, founders, and defenders of our freedoms, this Memorial Day weekend? Hopefully, we will enjoy all the entertaining activities that kick-off this upcoming summer season. But let us remember to reflect, with sincere and thoughtful regard, on the memory of American heroes, who enabled our holiday festivities and remarkable American way of life. Maybe, the American dream will even be alive and well-enough to be someone else's champion for freedom, Memorial Day, 2219.</p>

<p> I loved sheep. They are one of the most enjoyable domesticated farm animals. The lambs are fun to watch, as they playfully frolic in the fields. Sheep varieties come in many different colors and hues, which provide the best fleece for wool fibers and fabrics. Sheep are friendly, they can learn their names, and will respond to them, whether they are pets or wild stock. </p>
<p> For many reasons, there is significant sheep representation in language and symbology. We use expressions such as, the <em>black sheep</em>, to represent a different (sometimes rebellious) individual. Or we say a <em>wolf in sheep’s clothing</em>, to distinguish the dangerous person from a harmless one. Sheep figures were also used in mythologies, such as the Golden Fleece, where the rams were winged creatures with shining wool, and were symbols of authority and kingship. Sheep were also recognized and representative in major religions. In Christianity, The Good Shepherd’s sole focus was on His flock, and His priority was to attend to their needs and safety. Now, thanks to an amusing farmer in Scotland with a non-toxic dye, there is another remarkable image (rainbow-colored sheep) for which to adore and remember them!</p>
<p> The vibrant colors in this photo capture an exciting reminder that spring is here. With it always come new life, rebirth, warmth, beauty and hopefulness. Although, in the U.S., spring officially began March 20<sup>th</sup>, we see wide variations of it throughout the country. There were 94<strong>°</strong>F temperatures in Southern California this past week, while other areas were experiencing a more typical season in the 60’s-70’s. Still, the longer, brighter days facilitate an increase in positivity and optimism. This is the time for “spring” cleaning, which typically refers to the physical removal of dirt and clutter. But it is also an appropriate time to spring-clean ourselves, emotionally and spiritually. </p>
<p> Everyone has baggage that needlessly gets carried around but there are things we can do to lighten our loads with some spring-cleaning. When I was a youngster, I was taught that, in tennis, there is an unwritten rule: It is a responsibility that athletes have to one another. Each player agrees to play 50% of the time with someone who is better than him/herself and 50% of the time with someone who is worse. Playing tennis half of the time with a better athlete, strengthens our own games. We learn new strategies and moves, while we push harder to keep up with them. This allows us to eventually achieve successful results. In reverse, playing half of the time with lesser-level sports enthusiasts, allows them the same opportunities and benefits we receive when we associate with advanced players, because to the beginner, we are the better athlete. </p>
<p> It turns out, this is a wise rule to apply in life, especially as we try to spring-clean. We have a responsibility to surround ourselves with positive people who uplift and inspire us. We can learn from refreshing attitudes. Their optimism is contagious, as we continually attempt to develop our own rosy outlooks. We can, also, choose tv programming, social media content, and books that make us smile and encourage us. Likewise, we all encounter friends, family members, co-workers, neighbors, strangers, etc. who need the inspiration and positivity we have to offer. By observing our cheerful strategies and moves, they have the opportunity to develop a <em>glass half-full</em> perspective and to improve the quality of their own lives. </p>
<p> If we always remember to look for the <em>silver linings</em> in our storm clouds, we will be able to identify a higher purpose derived from our adversities. Looking for silver linings redirects a thoughtful reaction to hardships rather than a response of emotional outburst. Just like the athlete, we can ask ourselves what lesson is it that we might learn from pushing beyond the comfort zone to tackle difficulties. We will become more creative problem solvers if we rise to the challenge from an enlightened viewpoint. Maybe we need to learn patience or compassion, too, as we support others with their concerns. Living up to our responsibilities and looking for the silver lining assists us in releasing our own emotional baggage.</p>
<p> So, spring has sprung. What dilapidated old bag would you like to toss? Now is the perfect time to clean off the dirt and grime and brighten your life’s scenery with a fresh new view of rainbow sheep!</p>

<p> It is an interesting phenomenon that we look at others, who seem to have it all, or have it "all together," we think their lives are perfect, they are flawless and they don’t have any problems. It is such a natural tendency to assume that we are the only ones who are deficient in talents or consumed with worry. Even though the grass is always greener on the other side, one of life’s great lessons is that everyone is here to grow, overcome, achieve, and triumph. </p>
<p> Even throughout the best of childhoods/adolescences, it is a struggle to find ourselves and to discover our purposes. There are many avenues we can pursue in trying to do so. Some people figure out at an early age the things they enjoy or that come easily to them, while others have a deeper search ahead. They experiment with arts & sciences, sports, activities, reading, writing, and so on, until they begin to recognize their interests and proclivities. Growing pains are an integral part of youth, and, unfortunately, once we reach maturity, they don’t just magically disappear. Our journeys lead us through the long process of self-discovery and lifelong-learning.</p>
<p> While there are many factors that facilitate happiness, there seem to be two qualities that successful and fulfilled people possess. 1) Gratitude: Happy and accomplished people have an ability to focus on the good they see in their lives and in the world around them. Although they have disappointments, setbacks, losses, and sufferings just like everyone else, they have mastered the technique of redirecting their thoughts from the negative to the positive. Often, it is as simple as writing a daily gratitude log or journal. They record (during the day or at night) their awareness of moments/events for which they were thankful. As they reread their notes, they recognize benefits and blessings. This allows them to feel gratefulness throughout their routines and within their surroundings. </p>
<p> 2) Selflessness: They also have learned to develop a flair for kindness and service. It isn’t that they never feel cranky or discouraged, but they have been able to acquire the skill of looking beyond themselves in an effort to observe the needs of others. Maybe they just offer a smile to the busy passer-by or an encouraging word to their frustrated co-worker. Or they look for possible ways to carve out additional time for families and friends. Often, they are the first ones to volunteer for a church fundraiser or community service project. </p>
<p> <em>Psychology Today</em> reported that, “While the brain is remarkably complex, the neurochemical drivers of happiness are quite easy to identify. Dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin make up the<em> Happiness Trifecta</em>. Any activity that increases the production of these neurochemicals will cause a boost in mood. It’s really that simple. Since humans are social animals, it is no surprise that we are wired to help one another. In our complex modern society, there are many ways to give, and the good news is that we now understand that both the giver and receiver benefit from the relationship.” (Posted April, 2014, Eva Ritvo, M.D.)</p>
<p> In my book, <em>Heaven Heals (By Understanding Abraham’s Covenant), </em>religious volunteers discovered that service “builds confidence and self-worth, as they experience the love God has for everyone, and it brings true gratitude and peace into the lives of both those that serve and those that are the recipients of the service.” Looking for ways to help people is an effective way to demonstrate concern, develop love for others, and get those catecholamines/endorphins flowing!</p>
<p> So, the next time you see that successful achiever, ideal family, or delightful individual, just remember they had to grow (and are still growing) into themselves. Similarly, someone may be looking at you and thinking how very perfect you seem to be. </p>

<div class="_3LIFq _2Nypu"> For a musician, playing live is a truly noble profession. There are a few who do it exceptionally well and I have always stood in tremendous awe of their accomplishments. It is such good fortune to achieve dreams and to be able to make a living doing what one loves most — in my case, music.</div>

<p id="9499" class="graf graf--p graf-after--p"> I wish I could say I were in that League. My little league is the one that works by day to pay the bills and lives by night to make the music. Nevertheless, whether it is from the fifth row of an intimate theater or the pigeon rafters of an enormous auditorium, I find it remarkably rewarding to observe the great ones; I try to take away some morsel of craft that I can use to improve my performance skills.</p>
<p id="c28f" class="graf graf--p graf-after--p"> One of the covers I always enjoyed doing was a Stevie Nicks song, “After the Glitter Fades.” It sings of excitement and glamour in the rock and roll world but also of the pain, sorrow and loneliness it brings. I never really did the song very convincingly. After all, I’m not a rock star, and how can I compete with that famous voice, anyway? But I always liked the song for its melody, sincerity and vulnerability.</p>
<p id="e047" class="graf graf--p graf-after--p"> Everyone is looking for happiness that lasts but sometimes the only kind we find is fleeting. If we are wise, we ultimately realize the only way to find what we are looking for is to step boldly and courageously into the necessary changes that will cause a course-correct for us. Then, we will finally achieve the desired outcome. An age-old adage comes to mind: The definition of idiocy is repeating the same thing over and over but somehow expecting to get a different result.</p>
<p id="144b" class="graf graf--p graf-after--p"> Why is change always so difficult? Isn’t it curious that, although we all want more from life, it seems easier to choose the shallow comfort of the familiar over the frightening discomfort of the unknown? We remain in bad jobs, relationships or other unfulfilling situations rather than risking that which may finally lead to the lasting joy we have been desperately seeking. So-what if we fail in our first attempts? Kids fall all the time, cry for a moment, then get right back up and move on. Do we lose resiliency of body and spirit with age? Or have all our failures so permanently burned us that we can’t see how to move past the seared branding in our heads? We would do well to remember that Henry Ford failed, declaring bankruptcy five times before he succeeded in making the world’s best automobile of the time — the Model T. His famous quote is an education, in and of itself: “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” So, although practice may not make us totally perfect, along with persistence, it does make us successful — that is, if we don’t give up before we reach the end-product or the life’s-dream.</p>
<p id="50d3" class="graf graf--p graf-after--p"> I hope to continue to muster the determination to keep reaching for the stars. I thank all my mentors who unknowingly inspire me to press forward in my aspiration to accomplish goals. It is such an inspiration to rejoice over the seemingly superhuman achievements of our mere-mortal icons, whatever the noble profession. With so many lost youngsters in the world today, who seem intrigued and enamored by their Glow stick Pied-Pipers, isn’t it more critical than ever, to hop aboard our own success trains? Shouldn’t we be the ones preparing to be the inspirational examples of perseverance and reward for the next generation of Americans? I suppose we all just need to remember to not give up it and just keep our eyes on the prize!</p>

<p> Welcome Daylight savings time! I don’t know that I have been a proponent of year-long daylight savings. I always enjoy the feel of a season change when shorter days become noticeable and longer nights appear earlier. But with the approach of spring, it is enjoyable to bask in the glow of longer days and frolic in the warmth of moonlit nights. Not that Spring has completely arrived. It is certainly winter in most parts and, in California, it is still rainy and cool. Nevertheless, the Choir is undertaking rehearsals of heavenly music in preparation for its annual Easter Concert. I am reminded, through the inspirational lyrics, of the reaffirmation of new life, fresh beginnings, and endless possibilities. </p>
<p> Easter egg hunts, furry bunnies, and assorted candies are all fun reminders that Spring is almost here, but Jesus is the real reason for the season. Redemption from past mistakes, as we forge a new course of corrective action, is among the healing gifts of His Atonement. Peace, hope, and the assurance of a bright future are powerful rewards for even the most infantile of our efforts. As our exertion increases, mighty changes can occur, through God’s divine Omnipotence, enabling us to achieve personal accomplishments and profound joy, those of which were previously unimagined. </p>
<p> Beyond the immediate, the optimism of the Resurrection instills comfort and confidence in deliverance from life’s greatest tragedies. How it is that we are able to cope with pain, disappointment and the suffering of mortality? Is it in the knowledge that Christ overcame death, through the Resurrection of his spirit with his physical body? I believe the miracle of Easter is His guarantee that all mankind are benefactors of this gift of immortality. Even amid the distant or nearby sadness that lingers over life’s tragedies, we are amazingly able to find peace, comfort, and enjoyment in our daily experiences with family, friends, and other loved ones. Because of the promises Jesus brings to all, we can find joy, laughter, and hope in the simple pleasures of this lovely Easter Season and throughout the remaining year. </p>
<p> To those without knowledge or faith, life can seem too difficult and useless. Yet, even when all feels lost, if we can even just desire to believe, God promises that such a desire will blossom into hope, and hope leads to a profound faith. The good news of Jesus’ message is that He lives on and so will we, in a glorious, everlasting life. John 14:2, “In my Father’s house are many mansions…I go there to prepare a place for you.” </p>
<p>John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you… Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 15:12 “This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you.”</p>
<p> May all of you find peace and love throughout this Season. Don’t be too hard on yourself, others, or your communities! Try to see the good in everyone, the way God sees. <p> Amazing! That was the impression I recall when I think back to The Imax Theater’s 3D movie production of the Hubble Telescope. It was beyond incredible! The images from the telescope and the scientific discoveries were absolutely mind-boggling. I returned several times just to try to <strong>begin </strong>to absorb such infinite significance.</p>
<p class="graf"> Remember how much fun it used to be to go to an observatory and look through telescopes? Not anymore! Earth’s atmosphere distorts even the most sophisticated telescope’s photographs so that they seem primitive and inadequate. The Hubble orbits the entire earth in 97 minutes, traveling 5 miles/second, capturing a crystal-clear display of stars and worlds in countless galaxies. There is no atmosphere to interfere with the Hubble’s picture-taking abilities so, it’s phenomenal visual achievement will ultimately enlighten scientists and amaze onlookers for years to come.</p>
<p class="graf"> Sitting in the movie theater and attempting to comprehend the perfect order of space truly realigns and rearranges one’s perspective and priorities. I felt slightly foolish for focusing on some over-analyzed problem: Like when an opportunity slipped through my fingers because someone else’s song was better (or at least better for a certain project). It’s not to say that thoughts and feelings aren’t important. Of course, they are but obsessively dwelling on them is unproductive. As if all nature around us isn’t reason enough for endless optimism, looking through the eyes of the Telescope, we see that the expanse and majesty of the universe is breathtakingly limitless!</p>
<p class="graf"> With all the commotion and divisiveness surrounding us today, there is the temptation to gravitate towards negativity and hopelessness. Instead, we should be reminding ourselves to look upward and outward. This is exactly the time to stop to smell the roses, make a wish on a shooting star and appreciate the goodness that does exist in the world. The enormity of the Universe reminds us of the innumerable opportunities for success available to all those who seize the moment.</p>
<p class="graf"> I think I still have a lot to learn about dark matter, black holes, overcoming obstacles and the secrets of success. But I remember the magnificent reality check Imax’s Hubble presentation was. There will always be hurdles to jump and issues to resolve. But that is, actually, a good thing, since it develops patience, character, and problem-solving skills. </p>
<p class="graf"> Wouldn’t it be something if we could make splendid contributions that improved our own lives and the lives of those around us? What lessons could we discover from the resplendent galaxies filmed by Hubble? We are all still alive, we have the time. Do we have the inclination to explore this wildly wonderful planet and each one’s incredible purpose in it! </p>
<p class="graf"> Shouldn't we just pull up our big-boy/big-girl pants, step up to the plate, take our best swing, and give it a TRY? Go ahead, see if we can knock the ball out of the park. Stand back and watch it fly as far as the eye can see. Then let’s use our imaginations to envision the astronomic milestone we just accomplished, which will be photoengraved for generations to come, by the phenomenally spectacular and unforgettable Hubble Telescope!</p>

<p> The past year-end holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas are still fresh in my mind, even with the passing of two full months in 2019. Cold winters and cloudy days still have me remembering the sparkling lights, family, friends, food, reunion, gratefulness, fun, music, presents, love and joy! The miracle of the season is the confirmation of Belief, which confirmation occurs from the small, but exciting, acts of heartfelt gift-giving and service. The Holidays are the time of year when love, hopefulness, and renewal are most apparent.</p>
<p> Psalms 51:15–16 reminds us to <em>“Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows to the Most High: And call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver thee and thou shalt glorify me” (KJV).</em> This is one of those Scriptural passages, in which God gives commandments and then states the reward He intends to bestow. First, He commands us to offer thanksgiving: Be thankful. Secondly, He instructs us to pay vows: Keep commitments to God. Then, we are directed to call upon Him in the day of trouble: Pray for assistance. Next, He guarantees deliverance from trouble: Relief. Finally, He commands us to glorify Him, once deliverance has occurred: Return thanksgiving.</p>
<p> When we are thankful and “pay vows,” we gratefully praise and worship God. He expects us to honor our commitments to Him. He also tells us to pray for those things needed, and then He guarantees deliverance from life’s troubles (and sufferings). Although, He doesn’t say he will spare us from them, he has promised he will make burdens light and provide rest to our souls. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28/KJV). God always allows us to work through difficulties, since the daily struggle facilitates the development of strength and character. As we lean on Him during the hard times, we begin to recognize his hand in our lives, which recognition sews the seeds of hope, faith, and trust in God. Adversity is inherent to the human experience. If we continually foster an attitude of thankfulness, we learn valuable lessons from our trials. Sarah and Abraham are the standard of faithfulness, as they endured many years, awaiting the promised blessings of God’s covenant with them, which would be established through their son, Isaac. Patience, hope, empathy, compassion, steadfastness and optimism are only a few of the many take-aways to be achieved through dedicated faithfulness during troubled times.</p>
<p> The Lord always blesses the grateful with a soothing balm, in any stage of pain, illness or injury, even while we wait for the promised deliverance. Often, deliverance comes in the form of complete healing or pain relief. Other times it manifests itself in an increased capacity to bear a particular burden with ease and lightness. “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30/KJV). Then, as we enjoy God’s comfort and healing salve, we return thanks back to Him and glorify His Love, Power and Goodness. The cycle of thanksgiving, prayer, relief, thanksgiving begins a proliferation, leading to a momentum, of peace and joy. This expands and fuels an improved quality of life in the Faithful! The Psalms passages indicate that this is what God wants for us</p>
<p> Consequently, a portion of the holiday joy and excitement can be ours, continually throughout the year, if we try carrying that spirit of hope, gratitude, and positivity every day. Eventually, Thanksgiving begins the next anticipated and exhilarating Season of Light, Gratefulness, and New Birth. It is a worthy intention that we remember to give thanks and offer praise to the Great Deliverer of all, even among our trials and tribulations. He doesn’t only offer daily deliverance throughout the mortal condition, but He has paid the price of an eternal deliverance from the death and endless separation of his children. He literally offers the jubilant reward of everlasting life with Him, and a joyful reunion with family, friends, and loved ones — forever!</p>

<p> Thursday is February 14: Valentine’s Day. Although, the day is most traditionally associated with flowers and chocolates for a sweetheart, it is also recognized as a day to show affection for friends and others important to us. But too often, as with other holidays which have become over-commercialized, there is an unnecessary emphasis on the biggest and best gift(s), and possibly not enough reflection on the personal touches that represent the caring and appreciation we have for those dearly beloved. While there is nothing wrong with retail purchases, a sincere love focuses on <em>doing</em> something for the friend or loved one, making memories by spending time together, and a devotion to those creative means, which increase bonds and reinforce an ever-deepening relationship. </p>
<p> I was fortunate to enjoy a recent weekend with two of my brothers. I went with one of them to the hockey arena to watch a game in their two ticketed seats, while the other stayed home and viewed the game on TV. Several times, when the play occurring near our seats was captured by cameras in the end zone, the at-home spectator would screenshot us a picture texting, “I can see you on TV: Stay tuned!” As he increased the zoom feature of photos taken on the television, distortion occurred, and he would communicate throughout the game some curiously odd and comical photographs. We howled with laughter at the one that “clearly” resembled a bearded road monkey, next to a mangey, mopped-topped stray, seated in the risers behind the net. Granted, we probably do have extremely vivid imaginations, fueled by the entertainment of the occasion but there did appear to be a couple of strange characters amongst the crowd. But thanks to our modern technological devices, three individuals (in two seats) were able to share a memorable experience, which resulted in a good time that was had by all!</p>
<p> This Valentine’s Day might be the excellent opportunity to re-examine our gift options and choose the intimate ones that make the ideal “I love you” statement. The best presents are ones from the heart, such as, the homemade paper-glittered heart, that favorite prepared meal, a thoughtful token invoking exclusive memories or adventures, and the less-than-perfect handcrafted treasure, which is an obvious labor of love. These are priceless expressions that serve to invigorate relationships and strengthen those ties-that-bind. In the era of life-in-the-fast-lane, slowing down to make time for matters of true significance may be one of the great challenges of our times. But it is definitively among life’s most valuable accomplishments, and, as the years continue to fly at lightning speed, we will eventually enjoy looking back at the cherish moments created with time and love. </p>

<p> Healing can be a complicated endeavor. Physical, emotional, and spiritual pain often seem too consuming or overwhelming to resolve. How do we heal such deep wounds when they are frequently out of our control? Well, healing is a process, a series of steps and actions that, with awareness, effort, and patience, can eventually lead to a successful result. It is rarely a quick fix because it requires time and effort for mind and body to recover. But the good news is that we don’t have to do it alone; most of us have friends, family, religious and other support groups, who are eager and willing to help. God, Himself, is anxious for us to call on Him to aid and lift us in our sufferings, and He is always only a prayer away. Still, for those that feel lonely and isolated in their pain, there is ever more urgency to lean on God. He always calls to us in that calm, quiet voice, and urges us to come to Him and allow His presence to enter. The Powers of Heaven can affect a soothing balm in any stage of illness or injury, even when complete healing has not yet occurred. </p>
<p> Sometimes there are initial steps we can take to begin the healing process, such as lifestyle or behavior changes, counseling and therapy sessions, even prescriptions for physical or emotional medical conditions. These treatments can contribute to an improved health status. But, since God’s continual calls to us are often obscured by noisy distractions and frantic daily schedules, many times it is those desperate, challenging moments that privately draw us to our knees, as we earnestly plead for the hope and comforting cures that only divine guidance and intervention can provide. </p>
<p> Losing a loved one is probably one of the most difficult challenges in life because the painful loss and separation feels so permanent. Even though we may hope to see our loved one again, how can we receive an assurance of the reality that we will? The book, “Heaven Heals (By Understanding Abraham’s Covenant),” details Sarah and Abraham’s covenant with God, which answers this question (p.33) and provides the hope and comfort that, indeed, the love we experience in life does not end with death. Although with think of and miss our loved one daily, we can look forward to an eventual, joyful reunion because God loves the world and provides a heavenly reward for all His children. </p>
<p> The book takes readers through a spiritual journey that allows for the discovery of their true potential, as they develop a relationship that continually draws them closer to God. It reveals a unique and powerful plan that moves readers from passive observers into active participants in their own relationships. Heaven <em>can</em> heal aches and pains, transforming and empowering individuals, as they understand the significance of God’s covenant with Sarah and Abraham, and how it relates to them. It is then that they truly <em>feel the heal</em>, as they live and love in the way they were designed to do! </p>

<p> According to the <a href="http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/01/05/fewer-americans-rely-on-tv-news-what-type-they-watch-varies-by-who-they-are/" data-imported="1">Pew Research Center</a>, several resources, including <a href="http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/08/21/5-facts-about-the-state-of-the-news-media-in-2017/" data-imported="1">comScore TV Essentials and FactTank,</a> found that the three major cable news networks (CNN, Fox News, & MSNBC), Network News, and Local News organizations all saw declines in the average audience viewership during the time slot of the evening news in 2017. The average audience for the daytime slots remained relatively stable. More “Americans are relying less on television for their news”. The Pew analysis revealed that Local News experienced the greatest decline but still retains the largest audience of the three news sectors. The portion of “Americans who often rely on local TV for their news fell 9 percentage points, from 46% to 37%. Those who rely on network TV news declined from 30% to 26%”. Cable TV suffered less instability; there were “28% less viewers in 2017, compared with 31% in 2016”.</p>
<p> The <a href="https://transition.fcc.gov/osp/inc-report/INoC-20-News-Consumption.pdf" data-imported="1">FCC</a> reported that, in general, the traditional media (defined as newspapers and TV) has provided broad content (news, sports, stocks, etc.) in their papers and programming, whereas online viewers “can go to specialized, free sites that are typically better than what their local paper offers —except that those sites don’t expose them, even minimally, to the news of their communities”. On the positive side, <a href="http://www.journalism.org/2018/09/10/news-use-across-social-media-platforms-2018/" data-imported="1">Pew</a> found that online users expressed they like that their news is more accessible and interactive. On the negative, a <a href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3026082" data-imported="1">Reuter’s</a> survey indicated that there is lowered trust in the accuracy of the news. The <a href="https://transition.fcc.gov/osp/inc-report/INoC-20-News-Consumption.pdf" data-imported="1">FCC</a> also reported that greater polarization has occurred due to the “proliferation of media choices”. Pew documented that “the more people know about politics, the more likely they are to choose media that is consumed by people like themselves”. But, <a href="http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/06/05/almost-seven-in-ten-americans-have-news-fatigue-more-among-republicans/" data-imported="1">Pew</a> also found that 78% of those who follow the news less often said they try to avoid the news (unless something important happens). The executive director for professional practice of the <a href="https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2018/07/political_stress_when_is_enough_enough.html" data-imported="1">American Psychological Association</a>, Katherine C. Nordal, PhD, stated that the modern political climate instills a constant stress from which it is hard for Americans to escape. </p>
<p> In contrast to the anxiety of this current climate, there is optimism in the message contained in, “Heaven Heals (By Understanding Abraham’s Covenant).” It is a message that speaks of God’s love for all His children. One of the most important lessons of the Bible is the covenant God made with Abraham, which was a covenant, specifically, with Sarah and Abraham. There is a parallel in Sarah and Abraham’s eternal love story because it relates to the love stories of all couples, who make the same covenant with God. Although it is impossible to escape sorrow, disappointment, and loss in life, the book demonstrates that understanding Sarah and Abraham’s story, and realizing the meaning of their covenant with God, provides the perspective that life’s design is to overcome obstacles. And, no one is alone in his/her struggles. Others have wrestled with challenges, grown from trials, achieved joy and successes and, ultimately, accomplished greatness. Heaven <em>can</em> heal aches and pains, transforming and empowering individuals, as they understand the significance of God’s covenant with Sarah and Abraham, and how it relates to them.</p>
<p> The book is an inspirational journey that reveals the glorious eternal rewards in store for all God’s children and teaches the reader how to strengthen and improve his or her own lasting relationships with loved ones. It is also a unique opportunity to glance inside at the purpose of the temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. These magnificent structures are a source of curiosity, beauty, and inspiration around the world. The message of this book is intended to bring people together, which (not surprisingly) is welcomed news in today’s distracted and divided culture. </p>

<p> The earliest memories of my life as a musician are in the upper floor studio of Miss Arnold. I began my piano lessons (with my hand curled around a golf ball, in proper positioning technique) when I was 4 years old. My mom was a magnificent singer, pianist, performer and entertainer. Although, I will never fill her shoes, luckily for me, she was determined that I benefit from music in my life. She started me out with Miss Arnold’s piano lessons, then supported and encouraged me as I later dabbled in my brother's garage bands (you can image how well that went - sister hanging around). In high school, I sang in/accompanied A Capella choirs and musicals. I joined community chorales, began singing in the Church choir, and filled in as organist when I was 16. </p>
<p> Songwriting came next. All writing enables personal expression, and the process of writing allows for the organization of that expression. A valuable catharsis arises from tapping into one’s own thoughts and exposing them then, eventually, an awareness of their significance develops. For me, songwriting, which is the experimentation and combination of lyrics with notes, chords, and musical phrases, ultimately leads to the formation of a finished song! This is among the most fulfilling and enjoyable of all activities. </p>
<p> Whether writing, singing, playing, humming, listening or dancing to the universal tones of music, there is an emotional component that unites seemingly unusual and incompatible groups of people into one common thread of humanity. This musical achievement is the goal and I hope that an element of inspiration, optimism, and enjoyment will be communicated to my listeners, through the soft rock/adult contemporary style. </p>
<p> Song lyrics of God’s messages of love, hope, peace, second chances and persistence have played a significant part in the making of my book: “Heaven Heals (By Understanding Abraham’s Covenant).” This book is about the eternal love story of Sarah and Abraham, and about our own effective healing that occurs when we realize the meaning of their covenant with God and its relationship to us. I hope the lyrics have decorated this book and enhanced the messages presented to readers. It is my desire that the companion CD, of the same name, brings those musical lyrics to life, in a way that is enjoyable and supportive of the book’s content and purpose. We all struggle with our own obstacles in life, as did Sarah and Abraham, but, through books and songs, we realize we are not alone in our struggles. Many before us have wrestled to overcome, learn from trials, achieve joy and successes along the way and, ultimately, accomplish greatness in the end. We, too, can grapple, learn, achieve, overcome and triumph - just as Sarah and Abraham did. Good music (especially, the classics of hymns and period Masters) draws us closer to God, lightens life’s load and thoroughly enriches the adventuresome journey. </p>

<p><em> </em>“Heaven Heals (By Understanding Abraham’s Covenant),” discusses the covenant God made with Abraham, specifically, the covenant He made with Sarah and Abraham. Because documentation explaining this covenant is scattered throughout the scriptures, it can be difficult to realize its significance, and how it relates to all of God’s children. But, in this book, the documentation has been gathered and compiled into a concise study, which is easy for readers to understand and to apply to each one’s individual situation. </p>
<p> People from all religions will find it interesting to explore, throughout the book, the covenant between God and Sarah/Abraham because, as they will discover, it has a relationship to all individuals/couples. All religions have origins in God and the three major world religions, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam have foundational ties to the Old Testament. God created mankind in His image and He loves all His children. The study of Abraham’s covenant reveals His love for all, and His inclusive plan for them to use their free will to learn from mistakes in life, achieve personal growth in the recognition of good versus evil, gain knowledge from their mortal experiences, and form families and friendships that will endure eternally. </p>
<p> Christianity and Judaism have always had a direct interconnection. Biblical scholars have benefited from the exchange of information between the two religions. Understanding the importance of historical, cultural or linguistic influences, for example, has contributed to the unfolding of scriptural intent and provided great assistance in my research for this book. Also, over the past twenty-five years, as I have interacted with Islamic Americans, I have observed their strong work ethic, family bonds, citizen involvement, and religious values. Since God is all-knowing, all-powerful, all-present and all-loving/just, He inspires people everywhere with a portion of His word. There is wisdom to be learned from different world religions, where there is generally a belief in God, love of family, concern for humanity and fervent reverence for the majesty of His Creations. </p>
<p> “Heaven Heals (By Understanding Abraham’s Covenant),” has a message of God’s universal love. This love of God has the power to bring good people and religions around the world together. </p>

<p> Going to church is the way we worship God and we participate in fellowship with other believers. There is a peace that comes from the momentary escape of weekly concerns. We settle into the reverence of the sanctuary and the calming music that precedes the hour’s lesson of religious instruction. It is a time to offer prayers of gratitude or concerns, sing praises through song and story, and reflect on the activities of the recent past. We contemplate intended strategies for improvement, as we go forward towards a brand-new week of hopefulness. There is a generated energy achieved from the weekly “battery recharge,” a refocus on God’s priorities and a re-commitment to follow Him and serve others. Fellowship is gained from associations with similar others. There is strength is in numbers, and accomplishment is assured with a battalion of devoted do-gooders, confident in the dutiful purpose of bettering ourselves and the world around us.</p>
<p> On a personal level, when we study the Bible (in addition to going to Church) individually, among families, or in small groups, we allow the channels of inspiration to open and divine interaction occurs through God’s Holy Spirit. He can inspire, motivate, and encourage us with spiritual influences that are unique to our own concerns and circumstances. Innermost prayers are our ways of speaking to God and intimations received through quiet Scripture study is His way of “speaking” to us. We don’t literally hear His words with our ears, but we can sense a warmth and we experience impressions that come to mind during the still and serene moments of Bible study. Of course, God doesn’t answer our questions on command. He always allows us to work and grow through faith. It takes time and exertion to study scripture passages or small chapters daily, attend Church, and attempt to make small steps toward progress in our behaviors and habits. As we make the effort to draw close to God, through our personal study of the Bible, we begin to experience a Greater Presence in our lives, one that comforts, inspires, guides, loves, and empowers.</p>
<p> Over time, I have noticed that answers to questions come, and I enjoy peaceful reassurances, from combining consistent Bible study with weekly Church service. There is a great deal of commotion in the modern world; much of the technological activity is of great value, but a lot of its noise is distracting and disturbing. It is important to set aside time each day to center on meaningful Biblical meditations, take advantage of Sunday Service renewal, and enjoy the benefits of a welcomed reprieve from the demands of daily pressures. Bible teachings are classic. They apply to every generation because we all experience the human condition. God gives us direction in our individual and collective journeys, through the stories and messages contained in Church and in the Scriptures. When we hear and read God’s word, we begin to see the world and other people through His eyes. Becoming involved in Church activities enables us to contribute to our communities. We can apply religious lessons learned to help create a less-divisive, more inclusive atmosphere, and a more loving, kind, just, and compassionate society. This helps to soothe life’s sorrowful and disappointing situations by establishing a supportive, fulfilling and joyful environment for all. And in our very agitated society, the peace and confidence that transpires from God’s influence, may just work out to astonish us all! </p>

<p> The book of Genesis, in the Bible, tells that the prophet, Abraham, was originally named Abram, and Sarah, his wife, originally Sarai. God told Abram to leave his country, Ur, and He would show them the way towards the land of Canaan, where he would be blessed by God. As they traveled in Canaan, they came upon a famine, so Abram and Sarai continued southward to Egypt. But Abram feared that, because his wife was beautiful, he would be killed, and she would be taken by the princes to Pharaoh. At this trying time, they devised a plan to pass her off as his sister. When they arrived in Egypt, they were, indeed, separated. Abram was treated well because they believed him to be her brother but Sarai was taken away to the palace of Pharaoh. So, God sent plagues to afflict Pharaoh’s household. It was then that they were discovered to be a married couple. Pharaoh was angry and sent them away, out of Egypt, where they returned to Canaan. </p>
<p> Abram and Sarai were devoted to each other and they, like other devoted couples, were in search of a chance at the happy life of faith and family. God had previously promised Abram an everlasting seed, which would become a great nation, blessing the entire earth. Because of Abram’s great faith, he believed God, but wondered how he would have a child, since Sarai was barren. God reiterated that he would create a covenant with him but, thus far, the means by which this covenant would be established had remained vague. So, as was customary of the time, Sarai gave her handmaiden to Abram, that she might have children by Hagar, the handmaid. Hagar gave birth to Ishmael; then an angel pronounced to her that Ishmael’s seed would be multiplied exceedingly but that he would be a wild man, who would fight against every man and every man against him. Nevertheless, he would dwell among the brotherhood of men.</p>
<p> Finally, at last, when Abram and Sarai were both very old, in Genesis 17, God revealed the terms of His covenant to Abram, changing his name to Abraham, as a symbol of committed renewal that would result from this covenant into which he was entering. He also told Abraham that his wife, Sarai, would have her name changed to Sarah, symbolic of her renewal and inclusion within the covenant. The promises and guarantees made to them are detailed in the book, <em>Heaven Heals (By Understanding Abraham’s Covenant)</em>. One of the promises discussed, is that of an everlasting seed, or an eternal family. God declared that Sarah and Abraham’s son, Isaac, would be born to Sarah within the next year, and their covenant would be established and fulfilled through him. </p>
<p> One of the reasons God’s covenant with Sarah and Abraham is as confusing as it is, is that the scriptural documentation is scattered throughout many different chapters and verses. But the promises of the covenant unfold in a fascinating fashion, as the <em>Heaven Heals</em> <em>(By Understanding Abraham’s Covenant)</em> book compiles the dispersed documentation into a consolidated study of God’s covenental terms and conditions with Sarah and Abraham, and the significance and relationship those terms have to all God’s children. God has an incredible plan but, as each person struggles through the thorns and weeds of life, it requires hope and faith to uncover, step by step, the unique plan He has for everyone. Learning to trust and depend on God, praying for guidance and assistance to understand His ways and decipher each’s individual journey, is a lifelong pursuit, with much drama, heartbreak, and disappointment, as well as, many delightful joys and celebrations along the path. Ultimately, magnificent rewards are gained in the end, just as with Sarah and Abraham. </p>

<p>For those new to my site, I am a songwriter, and the author of the book, <em>Heaven Heals (By Understanding Abraham’s Covenant). </em>I’ve had many readers ask why I wrote the book and, although there were several catalysts, my best motivation was that I wanted to take the opportunity to clarify several confusing Biblical accounts, one of which is the account of Sarah and Abraham. The Bible is full of stories, parables, and lessons, some of which are more discernible than others. When I first read the account of Sarah and Abraham, I thought it was an awful story, full of drama, sadness, and plenty of tragedy to go around for all involved. But, as a result of my years of research and scripture study, I wrote the book in hopes of providing some gained optimism, insight and perspective, which has direct application to any and all readers. </p>
<p><em> </em> The book is based on the covenant God made with Abraham. He covenanted with Abraham that he and Sarah would have their long-awaited son, Isaac, who would be born to them (the covenant couple) within the next year. The accounts of Abraham and Isaac, and the story of (Abraham’s great grandson) Joseph, who was sold into Egypt, also, the celebration of the Passover, as well as, the separation and capture of the lost tribes of Israel, are all focuses in the book, as they relate to the covenant God made with Sarah and Abraham. The standard set by them is examined and explained, and the relevance of it is presented, in all its hope and glory!</p>
<p> Ever since I was a youngster, I have enjoyed reading the Bible and learning about other religions. When I attended college, Chicago Loyola University School of Dentistry/Dental Hygiene Program, I not only had an excellent education, but I was able to learn about the Catholic religion, up close and personal. It was a marvelous embarking that enabled me to develop an enduring respect for the goodness of Catholics and the motivation behind all their charitable efforts. <p> Sarah and Abraham’s story is one that touches us all and is an inspirational tale of hope and love. Everyone has a deep desire to be loved and we all hope for lasting relationships that are fulfilling and eternal. My reason for writing this book is to attract readers to begin their own journey through the incredible sagas told in the Bible. Much of today’s society dismisses religion and its tremendous significance and influence, which explains most of the modern chaos and divisive aftermath. I think I’m on a crusade to “save the Bible messages and life lessons" contained therein. Hopefully, through the book, I will entice old-comers to renew the commitment to their religious study and new-comers to experience the excitement of an adventuresome and valuable, brand-new discovery. </p>

<p>Fierce winds fueling horrific fires: News reports that more than 45 deaths are confirmed with many more people missing. The winds are ferocious again today; many trees uprooted around neighborhoods and tremendous damage. This Twitter photo captured the horror and heartbreak; I truly hope that whomever took it helped the horse get to safety. I am heartsick over the people and animal lives already lost to the State's greatest fire disaster. "Heaven Heals (by Understanding Abraham's Covenant)," speaks to the sorrow and sadness experienced from loss of loved ones through the normal course of life events or these kinds of devastating tragedies, ones for which we attempt to understand and try to explain. To all those who have a hope in faith, or even to those who simply desire to believe, there is a Perspective greater than the eye can see, one that enlightens the mind and warms the heart, in happy times and during the tragedies of life. All we have to do is ask the questions for which we long to know answers. Usually, of course, answers do not come overnight but continued efforts to ask and keep "eyes" open, eventually lead to small events or thoughts that come to mind. Over time, those lead to other circumstances or impressions, which all work towards guiding us to the insight we ultimately seek. We've all heard someone express a similar episode: "Something told be to go home and when I walked in the kitchen, I saw the flames on the gas stove - how did I forget to turn that off? What a coincidence that was!" Maybe, but maybe not. How would we ever know? I don't think we will until we take the first step and begin the search that will lead to unknown heights. </p>
<p>Praying for the firefighters' ability to combat these vicious winds. God help and comfort all ?. </p>

<p>When I was in college, my roommate’s sister discovered the Moody Blues, and turned us onto the music. They quickly became our favorite band of all our “favorite” bands back then. Then I discovered Fleetwood Mac and they soon became a close 2<sup>nd </sup>favorite band. And they still are. Over the years, we expect things to inevitably change (they always do) but a favorite band should not ever change, right? Wrong – even band members get old, bored, busy, tired, whatever – and we have to sit and patiently watch all the changes but, to my great delight, favorite bands do keep chugging along and they continue to dazzle audiences with familiar classics and magnificent performances. They even forget a line once in a great while (which keeps it real) and they remind us that even rock and roll legends, as seemingly perfect as they are on stage, are really only human, and that is always a splendid reality check for the adoring fan!</p>
<p> Well, Fleetwood Mac is coming to Los Angeles in December and I have truly been torn. How can Fleetwood Mac be Fleetwood Mac without Lindsey? I’m dying to see the new show but will I die from the disappointing and glaring hole left by the iconic singer/songwriter/guitarist/front man? I tell myself that Christine was missing for years (which was a devastating loss in terms of entertainment value and an impaired song reservoir) but I managed to still enjoy the concerts. Although, no Lindsey? How can it possibly be? But it just is. </p>
<p> The only constant in life is change (I do not accept change well) and there are often very good reasons for change: A chance to grow, TIME for the important things, opportunities for adventure, and on and on. So, I don’t know if I can do it but I’m trying to break free of familiar expectations and embrace a magnificent and exciting new musical encounter! I wonder what the future will bring. Can she do it? I guess the saga continues...</p>

<p>August 18, 2016 (<a href="http://www.breakpoint.org/bp-home" data-imported="1">BreakPoint</a>) -- In the months and even years leading up to this year’s Rio Olympics, much of the news about Michael Phelps was bad. In September of 2014, he was arrested for driving while under the influence in his hometown of Baltimore.</p>
<p>It seemed that Phelps’ best days, both in and out of the pool, were behind him.</p>
<p>But that’s not how it turned out, and I think you can guess why.</p>
<p>As you probably know, Phelps carried the American flag during the opening ceremonies on Friday August 5. Then, as of this writing, he's added five more gold medals to his impressive lifetime total, now numbering 23.</p>
<p>To put it mildly, both of these were unlikely less than two years ago.</p>
<p>As Phelps told ESPN, following his announced retirement in 2012, he struggled to “figure out who he was outside the pool.” In his words, “I was a train wreck. I was like a time bomb, waiting to go off. I had no self-esteem, no self-worth. There were times where I didn’t want to be here. It was not good. I felt lost.”</p>
<p>Like a lot of people struggling with similar feelings, he self-medicated.</p>
<p>In the immediate aftermath of that DWI arrest, he cut himself off from family and other loved ones and “thought the world would just be better off without me ... I figured that was the best thing to do — just end my life."</p>
<p>That’s when a friend came to his rescue: former All Pro linebacker Ray Lewis, whom Phelps considers a kind of “older brother.” Seeing the hopelessness and despair in his young friend, Lewis, an outspoken Christian, told him, “This is when we fight ... This is when real character shows up. Don’t shut down. If you shut down we all lose.”</p>
<p>Lewis convinced Phelps to enter rehab and gave him a book to read while he was there: “The Purpose-Driven Life” by my friend Rick Warren.</p>
<p>The book changed Phelps’ life. Within a few days, Phelps called Lewis and told him “‘Man this book is crazy ... The thing that’s going on ... oh my gosh ... my brain, I can’t thank you . . . enough, man. You saved my life.’”</p>
<p>As Phelps told ESPN, Rick Warren’s book “turned me into believing there is a power greater than myself and there is a purpose for me on this planet.”</p>
<p>The book, which tells readers that “relationships are always worth restoring,” also convinced Phelps to reconcile with his father from whom he had been estranged for more than two decades. Upon seeing each other, they embraced.</p>
<p>As I record this commentary, Phelps still has two more chances to medal, but his story of hope and restoration doesn’t really need any further embellishments—to use one of my favorite words, it’s <em>miraculous</em> enough.</p>
<p>Michael Phelps’ story is a reminder that no matter how big a mess your life may be, and no matter how dim the last embers of hope may glow, God is still there. It’s also a reminder of the role that God’s people are called to play as bringers of hope and agents of restoration.</p>
<p>The results may not be as dramatic as Phelps’ story but they will matter every bit as much.</p>
